Asteroid Pythia #432

4/3/2018

Asteroid Pythia # 432 is one of the foremost asteroids that points to talent in divination. Pythia was the name of the group of priestesses who prophesied at the temple at Delphi. A giant, terrifying serpent called the Python, son of Gaia, haunted the caves of Parmasus until slayed by Apollo and subsequently used to guard the temple where these priestesses practiced and from it they took their name. In myth, the Python rotted at the base of the temple and in its decay, gases rose up from the earth and inspired the Pythia to prophesy. These women were single, childless and devoted to their calling.

Water scrying was the chief mode of divination used and as a priestess would sit in the base rooms of the temple, where the gases were thickest, she would breathe deeply and enter a trance where she would begin to interpret the signs and symbols in the water. Some myth has the Pythia using snake venom to make contact with the information contained in the other world. Fasting and cleansing were a part of their monthly requirements and this would point to needing to clean out and take a break from the cumulative poisons in their systems. However these ecstatic states were reached, it was obviously not healthy as the Pythia did not live into old age. These women were used up in the intensity of divination and having no chosen purpose outside their assigned calling, died in service to Apollo's temple.

I enjoyed your write up on Pythia, which to me was previously unknown. Since I have it conjunct the Sun (2 degrees apart from a conjunction), partile sextile to Mars, partile square Pluto (my chart ruler), partile trine Uranus (which is conjunct my AC) I readily agree with your interpretation on her effect in the Natal chart. Sadly it doesn’t touch my Venus so I can’t see myself as making money out of this gift.
